— Albert W. Bishop, the first treasurer of Arkansas Industrial University
and the second president of the university, was born on this day.
Bishop came to Arkansas during the Civil War, commanding the post at
Fort Smith after the Union Army secured it.
1844 — The Whig Party held a large meeting on this day at the courthouse in Fayetteville to nominate David Walker for Congress and to select delegates for a state convention.
1863 — On this day, Lt. Col. A.W. Bishop of the Union Army was made provost marshal of Fayetteville, and Col. M. Larue Harrison was named post commander when Union troops occupied Fayetteville for the first time since the Civil War began.
