1828 — Washington County was established on this day. Initially,
Washington County included present-day Benton and Madison counties.
Fayetteville, originally called Washington Courthouse, was chosen as
the county seat. Because of confusion arising from another town in
Arkansas already named Washington, commissioners of Washington
Courthouse voted later to change the town's name and chose Fayetteville
because two of the commissioners were from Fayetteville, Tennessee.
1964 — The University of Arkansas football team beat the University of
Texas, then rated No. 1 in the country, on this day en route to a
national championship.
