1859 -- The Pike's Peak Wagon, manufactured by H.J. McRoy for a journey to Pike's Peak, snaked through the streets of Fayetteville for the first time on this day. "It was drawn by six spirited horses controlled and directed by the master hand of Charles E. Butterfield," according to The Arkansian.
1951 -- Thieves stole more than $1,600 worth of radio and motion picture equipment on this day. The equipment was taken from the new Fine Arts Building on the University of Arkansas campus and included projectors, an amplifier, recorders and a microphone.
1988 -- Former U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm spoke at the University of Arkansas on this day. Chisholm, who championed civil rights for ethnic minorities and women, said, "If you're going to sit back and wait for somebody to do something for you, you will never get there."
