2006 -- Wallace Spearmon Jr. of Fayetteville broke the world record for the 300-meter dash at the Tyson Invitational Track Meet in Fayetteville on this day. Spearmon, who broke the American record in the 200-meter dash a year earlier while running for the University of Arkansas, competed in the race against three other runners: Kerron Clement, who held the world record for the 400-meter dash; LaShawn Merrit, a gold medalist; and Omar Brown, another former UA sprinter. The second- and third-place finishes by Clement and Merrit were so close to Spearmon’s 31.88 that either of them would also have broken the world record, set in 1989 by Brazil’s Rob daSilva.
