The Moonshiner Madness Marathon. |
The Moonshiner Madness Marathon was a triathalon race held in Fayetteville that was approximately the length of a marathon. It was run during the 1980s and 1990s until a heavy storm on the morning of the race one year forced its cancellation that day. The route of the race, which had no traffic control to speak of, became more dangerous with traffic over the years, too, especially the bicycle portion along Arkansas Highway 45, and that change may have affected the organizers' desire to continue the race as well.
The race began and ended at the Fayetteville square. Participants started by running east from the square, into the hollow, south on Willow and then east out Huntsville Road to Crossover Road and then Wyman Road. Runners switched to canoes at the Wyman Bridge for the second leg of the race, going down the White River to Fox Run Landing, where canoers then ran uphill for 1 mile to the second exchange point. They then switched to bicycles, riding out to Highway 45 and turning east, pedaling out to its intersection with Wyman Road and then turning around and coming back into town via Mission, Lafayette, Washington, Dickson and Block streets to return to the square.
