![]() Early settlers in the region: Guillaume and Futenap? |
In his Grand Atlas Universel, published in 1816 in Paris, Adrien Hubert Brue produced 50 large-scale maps of all the continents. The maps of North America included one of the earliest, most accurate depictions of the paths of the Arkansas and White rivers. The curl of the Riviere Blanche northward, west and then back southwest matches its real path, although its headwaters don't extend quite so near the meander of the Riviere Arkansas. If correct, the two farmsteads labeled Plantation de Guillaume and Etabt. Futenap would be relatively near the present-day Fayetteville. A later London map identified the locations as Williams Settlement and Futenahs Settlement, the names of which are lost to history for now.
