The mansard roof of Old Main and its two towers are among the most novel architectural features of Fayetteville. Construction finished on the building in 1875 and for many years, select students would climb the stairway in the center part of the building, come out of the small doorway leading to the roof, walk to bell tower on the right and ring the bell on the hour. Postmarked in September 1914, this card was addressed to Mrs. M.A. Stratton of Mena, Arkansas. It reads: “Box 136, Boys Dorm. Sept. 22, 1914 College days have begun and already I have the mark of humiliation on my countenance, due all freshmen. Barring upperclass men and mosquitoes I have been favored by providence, Clifton”
